1. Superman: The Motion Picture Anthology (1978-2006) [Blu-Ray] (1978)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Superman doesn’t qualify among my favorite comic book adaptations, as I prefer the Batman and Spider-Man movies. Nonetheless, it holds up well after more than 30 years and remains a class act. The Blu-ray provides excellent audio and supplements but suffers from inconsistent visuals. The image issues can frustrate at times, but this remains a very nice r

2. Superman: 4-Disc Special Edition (1978)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: While this four-DVD set is clearly the best one on the market, should fans who own the original 2001 release upgrade? Yes, but only if they care about extras and/or prefer to see the movie’s 1978 theatrical cut instead of its Expanded Edition. The 2001 DVD was already a terrific package, but the 2006 release is even better. Starring Marlon Brando, Gene H

3. Superman IV: The Quest For Peace - The Motion Picture Anthology (1978-2006) [Blu-Ray] (1987)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Superman IV is an unmitigated dud that does nothing other than taint an already sullied franchise. It manages to make Superman III look good by comparison, but that’s its only substantial achievement. The Blu-ray presents very good picture and some useful supplements but suffers from somewhat weak audio. If you care more about visuals than sound, this is

4. Superman (1978)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: I was very pleased with the DVD release of Superman. The movie itself doesn’t qualify as my favorite comic book adaptation - I still prefer the first two Batman flicks - but it holds up well after nearly a quarter of a century despite a few flaws. Starring Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Christopher Reeve. Warner, $24.98, 5/1/2001.

5. Superman: The Motion Picture Anthology (1978-2006) - Bonus Disc [Blu-Ray] (2011)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Across the board, “Superman: The Motion Picture Anthology 1978-2006” treats the films well in terms of picture and audio, with only a few minor missteps along the way. The total package comes with a strong set of supplements capped by the goodies on this “Bonus Disc”. The inconsistent quality of the films makes it tough to give the package a hearty endor

6. Superman IV: The Quest For Peace (Deluxe Edition) (1987)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Superman IV is an unmitigated dud that does nothing other than taint an already sullied franchise. It manages to make Superman III look good by comparison, but that’s its only substantial achievement ... If you already own the original DVD, you’d only want to “upgrade” to this one to get the extras. I think picture and audio remain the same, but this edi

7. Superman IV: The Quest For Peace (1987)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Unfortunately, nothing about Superman IV seemed superior to any of the prior entries. For those who thought Superman III was as bad as it could get, think again. SIV suffered from an incoherent narrative, flat acting, ridiculous logic flaws and some of the worst special effects ever captured on film. I hate to report that the Superman franchise went out

8. Village of the Damned [Blu-Ray] (1995)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Though far from John Carpenter’s worst film, Village of the Damned doesn’t fare especially well. I think the movie comes with potential, but as told here, the result seems flat and bland. Starring Christopher Reeve, Kirstie Alley. Shout! Factory, $34.93, 4/12/2016.

9. Superman: Extended Cut [Blu-Ray] (1978)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: Superman holds up well after almost 40 years and remains a class act. However, the more than three-hour Extended Cut becomes a slow, lackluster curiosity. Starring Gene Hackman, Christopher Reeve. Warner, $22.99, 10/3/2017.

10. Superman III: Deluxe Edition (1983)
Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: I certainly can’t recommend a movie as bad as SIII to anyone other than Superman die-hards. Should those who already own the original DVD get this one? Probably. It offers a minor picture quality upgrade along with a few supplements they’ll enjoy. Anyone without a serious interest in Supes should skip it, though. Starring Christopher Reeve, Richard Pryor
